HIFU Treatment

What is HIFU Treatment?

High intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU, is a non invasive treatment that uses focused ultrasonic energy to target deeper layers of the skin. This can stimulate collagen, which may improve firmness and support a more lifted appearance in suitable candidates.

The energy is delivered below the surface of the skin so the outer layer remains intact. Treatment parameters are selected by the practitioner to reach specific depths. A consultation is required to assess suitability and to discuss benefits, risks, costs, and alternatives before any procedure.

Areas that may be considered for HIFU skin tightening

  • Lower face, jawline, and mid face in selected cases
  • Under the chin
  • Neck
  • Brow area after assessment
  • Fine lines and wrinkles in appropriate areas

At Revita Medical & Skin Clinic, treatments are performed by trained practitioners using medical ultrasound devices appropriate for this purpose. Care is individualised and outcomes vary between people. Marketing claims about device brand names are not a substitute for clinical assessment.

How many HIFU sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies by skin characteristics, treatment area, and goals. During your consultation, your practitioner will examine your skin and provide a personalised plan. Some people notice improvement after one session while others benefit from staged treatments over several months.

How does HIFU work?

HIFU focuses ultrasound energy at controlled depths to create precise points of thermal effect, which can stimulate collagen. Settings are adjusted to the treatment area and your skin. Your practitioner will explain what to expect, including possible sensations during energy delivery.

Is HIFU painful and what is the recovery time?

People often describe warmth, tingling, or brief prickling during treatment. Topical or other comfort measures may be discussed. Recovery is typically short. Temporary redness or mild swelling can occur and generally settles over hours to a few days. You can usually resume daily activities soon after, provided aftercare instructions are followed.

How does HIFU compare to other skin treatments?

HIFU targets deeper structures compared with many surface based treatments. It can be considered for mild to moderate laxity in appropriately selected patients. It is not a replacement for surgical procedures and may be combined with a broader plan that addresses skin quality or facial volume loss treatment when clinically appropriate. Your practitioner will outline options and their limitations so you can make an informed choice.

Consultation and preparation

At consultation we review your medical history, examine the treatment area, and discuss your goals. A tailored plan outlines the number of sessions, expected recovery, and costs. Please arrive with clean skin free of makeup or active skincare on the day. Pre and post care will be provided in writing.

When will I see results and how long do they last?

Some people notice a degree of tightening soon after treatment, with further changes typically developing over two to three months as collagen remodels. Longevity varies based on age, skin characteristics, sun exposure, and lifestyle. Effects are temporary and maintenance treatments may be suggested. No specific outcome or duration can be guaranteed.

Are there any side effects or risks?

HIFU is generally well tolerated when performed by trained professionals. Temporary effects can include redness, mild swelling, tenderness, or tingling. Your practitioner will discuss potential risks and whether HIFU is suitable for your concerns and medical history.

Can HIFU replace a surgical facelift?

Surgical procedures can produce more dramatic and longer lasting structural changes but involve anaesthesia and recovery. HIFU is a non invasive alternative for selected concerns with more modest outcomes. Your practitioner can discuss whether HIFU aligns with your goals or if another approach may be more appropriate.

Who may not be suitable for HIFU?

HIFU may not be appropriate if you have active skin infection in the area, certain autoimmune or connective tissue disorders, open wounds, implanted electronic devices in or near the treatment field, metal implants directly in the treatment zone, are pregnant, or have significantly lax skin better suited to other options. This will be assessed during consultation.

Risks and Recovery

All procedures carry risks. Your practitioner will explain potential complications and provide written aftercare. Possible risks include discomfort, redness, swelling, bruising, temporary numbness or tingling, sensitivity to touch, transient welts, headache, temporary jaw or chewing discomfort, pigment change, small areas of burn or blister, textural irregularities, fat atrophy in rare cases, nerve irritation causing temporary weakness or altered sensation, scarring, and an outcome that differs from expectations. Rare complications can occur. Recovery experiences differ. Protect the area from heat and sun, avoid harsh skincare until advised, and follow the plan provided. Seek prompt advice if you experience increasing pain, spreading redness, discharge, fever, or any unexpected change at the treatment site.
