Chemical Peel

Your skin immediately following the peel may look red and feel warm. This response usually settles over several hours as the skin begins to recover.

A Jessner peel is a medium depth chemical peel that combines lactic acid, salicylic acid and resorcinol to exfoliate and resurface the skin. It is used to improve the appearance of acne and to reduce visible pigmentation such as hyperpigmentation and some forms of melasma, helping the skin look clearer with a more even tone. This multipurpose peel can be applied to the face and selected areas of the body when clinically appropriate. Individual suitability, expected outcomes and the number of sessions required vary and will be discussed during a consultation.

Immediately after the peel, temporary redness and warmth can occur. In the days following the treatment, dryness with flaking or peeling may develop while the skin sheds. Some people experience short term breakouts following resurfacing. These effects generally resolve as the skin settles, and aftercare is important for comfort and recovery. Outcomes differ from person to person.

Pre Care

  • Avoid sun exposure, fake tan and solarium use for 2 to 4 weeks prior to treatment. Use broad spectrum SPF50+ daily.
  • Avoid waxing, Laser or IPL hair removal, or depilatory creams on the area to be treated for 2 weeks prior.
  • Avoid cosmetic medical treatment for 2 to 4 weeks prior to the peel.
  • Avoid other skin procedures such as Laser, IPL or skin needling for 2 to 4 weeks prior.
  • If you are prone to cold sores, speak with your healthcare professional about antiviral prophylaxis. Starting medication 2 to 3 days prior may be recommended to help reduce the chance of a flare.
  • Use of appropriate preparatory skincare as advised for at least 2 weeks prior is important for best tolerance and even results.

Post Care

  • Do not pick, peel or rub the skin while it is healing.
  • Avoid sun exposure. Stay out of direct sun until the skin has healed, wear protective clothing, and use broad spectrum SPF50+ as directed.
  • Avoid active products such as retinol, strong acids and physical scrubs for 5 days post treatment or until the skin feels comfortable.
  • Avoid swimming, vigorous exercise, hot showers, saunas and steam rooms for 2 to 3 days after treatment to prevent excess heat in the skin.
  • Avoid colouring your hair for 1 to 2 weeks post treatment if the treated area may be exposed to hair dye or heat styling.
  • Delay other skin treatments such as microdermabrasion, Laser or skin needling for 2 to 4 weeks post treatment or until advised.

Risks and Recovery

All cosmetic procedures carry risks. With chemical peels, possible risks include redness, swelling, tingling or stinging, temporary darkening or lightening of the skin, prolonged dryness or sensitivity, acne flares, cold sore reactivation, infection, scarring, and delayed healing. Sun sensitivity increases after a peel and sun protection is essential. More than one session may be required to address your concerns, maintenance may be needed, and results are not guaranteed. Recovery experience and timing vary between individuals and depend on peel strength and skin type. This information is general. A consultation with an appropriately qualified health professional is required to assess suitability, discuss alternatives and risks, and provide personalised aftercare instructions.
