Acne

Acne is a very common skin condition and can be quite distressing for those experiencing it.

Acne is a very common skin condition and can be quite distressing for those suffering from it. It can affect anyone regardless of age or gender. Some of the forms of acne are whiteheads, blackheads and cysts. Acne arises when oil and dead skin cells become trapped within an enlarged oil gland, creating a blockage called a comedone. When a comedone becomes inflamed, often due to bacteria that reside on the skin, acne lesions can appear. Contributing factors include genetics, hormones, stress and skincare habits. A professional assessment helps to identify type and severity before recommending options

At Revita Skin Clinic we focus on addressing breakouts with a combination of clinic treatments and a home skincare plan.

Options that may be recommended include:

  • Jessner peel or other chemical peels selected for your skin type
  • Advanced microdermabrasion as part of a structured program

After active acne has settled, some people notice marks or textural change where the acne was. To address selected acne scarring, medical microneedling may be discussed when clinically appropriate. Outcomes vary between individuals and more than one session is often required. A consultation with a registered health professional is needed to confirm suitability, expected benefits, risks and alternatives.

Risks and Recovery

All procedures carry risk and are not suitable for everyone. You will receive personalised advice after a medical history and skin assessment.

  • Common temporary effects: redness, warmth, mild swelling, tightness, dryness or flaking for several days after peels, microdermabrasion or microneedling.
  • Less common risks: irritation, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, infection, prolonged redness, acne flare, allergic reaction to products and in rare cases scarring.
  • Photosensitivity: many treatments and active ingredients increase sun sensitivity. Daily broad spectrum SPF 50+, protective clothing and shade seeking are essential during and after treatment.
  • Precautions and contraindications: recent isotretinoin use, active skin infection, open wounds, certain medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding and some medical conditions may affect timing or suitability. Please disclose all medical conditions and medicines.
  • Aftercare: use gentle cleanser and moisturiser as directed, avoid picking or squeezing lesions, pause active skincare until advised and follow all instructions provided by your practitioner.
  • Course and maintenance: multiple sessions may be recommended. Maintenance with evidence based skincare and lifestyle measures is often required. Results differ between individuals and cannot be guaranteed.
