Skin needling, also called microneedling, is a technique used to address a range of skin concerns. At Revita Medical and Skin Clinic this procedure is provided by a registered medical practitioner with experience in skin treatments. We assess each person individually and tailor the approach to their needs. Outcomes vary from person to person and a consultation is required to determine suitability.

How does it work?

The microneedling device creates controlled micro-channels in the skin that stimulate the body’s natural renewal and repair responses. These temporary channels may also assist the application of topical products during your treatment session. By systematically creating micro punctures, the body responds with wound-healing cascades that can support skin rejuvenation. In many people this includes stimulation of collagen production over time. Individual responses differ and multiple sessions may be recommended based on assessment.

Benefits

Microneedling is designed to minimise disruption of the epidermis compared with some other techniques, which may reduce discomfort for many people. Single-use cartridges are used to reduce contamination risk, and the adjustable needle depth allows the procedure to be tailored to your skin and treatment area. The device can be used on delicate areas such as around the eyes, eyelids, earlobes, neck, lips and the nose when clinically appropriate. Results, treatment plans and intervals are determined after a consultation.

What to expect

Temporary redness and mild swelling are common, similar to a light sunburn sensation. These effects usually settle within 24 to 48 hours. Some pinpoint bleeding and bruising can occur. Over several days to weeks many people notice a smoother and more radiant appearance, however improvements typically develop gradually and the full effect may take several months. Outcomes depend on your skin characteristics and adherence to aftercare.

What is the down time like?

The inflammatory response is usually brief, and visible redness generally fades within hours to a pink tone that can last 12 to 48 hours. Your practitioner will advise on skincare, sun protection and when you can resume usual activities.

What skin concerns can be considered for microneedling?

Appearance of stretch marks              Visible pore size

Overall skin quality and texture             Fine lines and wrinkles

Appearance of certain scars, including those from surgery, accidents or acne, following assessment.

Will it be painful?

A topical anaesthetic cream may be used before the procedure to improve comfort. Sensation varies from person to person and by treatment area.

How many treatments do I need and how often? Microneedling sessions are typically scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart. The number of sessions recommended will depend on your goals, the specific concern being managed and your individual response. Microneedling can be considered for many body areas including the face, neck and limbs where suitable after consultation.

Risks and Recovery

All cosmetic procedures carry risks. With microneedling these can include temporary redness, swelling, bruising, pinpoint bleeding, dryness or flaking, sensitivity, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, infection, prolonged irritation and, rarely, scarring. Recovery experiences vary. You may need to modify activities, avoid active skincare for a period, and use strict sun protection as advised. Not all people are suitable for this procedure. A thorough consultation will cover your medical history, expected benefits and limits, possible adverse effects, aftercare needs and alternative options. Information about risks should be easy to find and will be discussed with you during your consultation. Outcomes cannot be guaranteed, and results differ between individuals.
